This page lists a selection of provenances from books in the Cathedral Library which record books given to the Library by Canons and others, or which in some way relate to the history of the Library. It is restricted to printed books currently in the Dean and Chapter's collections and therefore excludes provenances from the Howley-Harrison Collection, the Elham Library and the Mendham Collection (on loan to the Cathedral).

A full list of names of previous owners is available for the Dean and Chapter collections (including the Howley-Harrison and Elham Collections) and for the Mendham Collection.

c. 1629 : Gerhard Vossius, Canon of Canterbury
Gerhard Johann Vossius (1577–1649) was made a non-residentiary Canon of Canterbury and came to England to be installed in 1629. It is possibly on this occasion that he presented a copy of one of his books to Archbishop George Abbot. The book will have come to the Cathedral Library as part of Abbot's gift of 25 books in 1633.

Nathaniel Brent (c. 1573–1652) was Warden of Merton College, Oxford, in succession to Sir Henry Saville (editor of the book in question). He had married the niece of Archbishop George Abbot, and was appointed commissary of the diocese of Canterbury and vicar-general to the archbishop. Brent was appointed as commissary general for the city and diocese of Canterbury during the vacancy following the death of Archbishop Abbot in 1633 (CCA-DCc-ChAnt/S/405), but by 1640 had fallen out with Archbishop Laud and sided with the parliamentarians. He was knighted in 1629.

Many of the surviving volumes with armorial bindings with the arms of Archbishop Abbot (Gules, a chevron between three pears or) came into the Library at a later date with the gift by Archbishop Sancroft of duplicates from the Library at Lambeth Palace (c. 1680–1690).

The earliest recorded owner, William Watmer was an alderman of Canterbury in the early 17th century, and mayor in 1608 and 1620. Whatmer's son Giles died in 1675, which coincides with the record of purchase, when the book was probably bought by Edmund Burges and given to the Cathedral Library.
